Composting Toilet Systems: The Colonial

The Colonial is a continuous process composting toilet for domestic and small commercial installations. It has a fixed capacity of 4-5 people on a permanent basis. Larger families require a second unit. As with all continuous process composting toilets, the pile needs to be occasionally raked forward towards the outlet door. The composted material is removed from the chamber with a shovel. Because the chamber is located under the house, in most cases it does not receive radiant heat from the sun. The composting process is therefore slower than with a batch process toilet, which has chambers exposed to direct radiant heat. More time is therefore required to ensure that composting is complete. The Colonial is only available in Queensland.

The Colonial comes complete with everything required for internal installation, including the pedestal and seat. Some additional plumbing materials are required to complete the external installation which are not supplied for reasons of freight cost. These can be bought locally from your garden shop for about $80. The minimum height required to install the chamber beneath the bathroom floor is 1.2 meters, although by digging into the ground this can be reduced to 1.05 meters.

Included in the standard Colonial Package are:-

  • Hand made traditional warm white ceramic pedestal with honey oak wooden seat.
