cm2 vs ecopod composting toilet

If you’ve been on the lookout for a composting toilet (also called a Nature Loo, Eco Pod, Eco Loo, Dry Toilet or Eco Toilet) for a while, it’s likely you’ve come across a lot of different makes and models on various different websites. When it comes down to it, the natural process of composting toilets are pretty much the same (they all use a combination of psychrophilic, thermophilic or mesophilic composting) but the mechanisms, parts, build and if they meet Australian Standards can all make a big difference on the safety of handling humanure.

Today we’re going to be looking at two composting toilets, the Piteco 500 (Also known as the Ecopod in Australia) and the CM2 composting toilets and look a little closer at these two products to get an understanding of their differences.

Piteco 500 vs CM2 Composting Toilet

Where are they made?

The CM2 is built by Clivus Multrum, a family owned Australian composting toilet company that has been operating for over 35 years.

Piteco 500
The Piteco is an imported product made by Piteco in Denmark who make a range of different toilet and storage products.

How many people can use them?

The CM2 is a perfect 2 person full-time toilet. This means that if two people using it full time it will run no problems at all or you can have more than two people using it part-time (like in a holiday home).

Piteco 500
The Piteco 500 is pretty much the same as the CM2 in this department. It will happily work for two people fulltime and up to 4 people part-time.

Do they use electricity?

Both toilets will need to use a small amount of electricity to run the exhaust fan that helps to vent odours and evaporate liquid away. Both models use a 12-volt fan that can be connected to solar power.

How many chambers do they come with

The CM2 comes with two chambers including lids as standard. This enables you to fill one, then swap it out and allow it to cure as you fill the second chamber.  Additional chambers can be purchased if increased capacity is required.

Piteco 500
The Piteco 500 composting toilet comes with 1 chamber without a lid  The full chamber will need to be emptied immediately once full for reuse.

What are the dimensions of both systems?

The dimensions of the CM2 are 620mm L x 395mm W x 500mm H. The floor space needed is 650mm x 740mm. The toilet seat height is 470mm.

Piteco 500
The dimensions of the Piteco 500 are  706mm(L) x 400mm(W) x 590mm(H). The toilet seat height is 420mm.

The CM2 comes in slightly more expensive at $900 for the toilet with an additional chamber (at the time of writing) but the benefit of this system is it’s backed by a company that’s been trading for over 35 years.

Piteco 500
The Eco-Pod retails for between $795 - $1245 depending on what reseller you purchase it from. The one downfall of this system is they’re imported toilets, so they’re not Australian made for Australian conditions.

What’s included with both systems?

The CM2 gives you a complete package for everything you will need. Here’s a list of all the items the CM2 comes with:-

  • 2 x composting chambers & lids
  • White toilet seat & pedestal
  • Ventilation system including 12 volt 5-watt fan in housing and transformer*
  • Easy to follow DIY installation and maintenance manual
  • 1 x 125ml Nature Flush Enzymes & spray bottle
  • 1 x bag of wood shavings

Piteco 500
The Piteco 500 on the other hand only comes with the toilet, extra chamber and fan. You will need to purchase wood shavings and enzymes separately.
